National anthem

I have heard enough non sense on the topic. My views on the topic...

I don't care who this songs praises. or used to praise in the first place..A mere stone once placed in the temple assumes importance. It does not matter where did the stone belonged in the first place. For me this song is placed in the temple of motherland now, and I don't care how much the 'intellectuals' discuss over where it belonged previously...

For me singing either Vande Mataram or Jan Gana Mana evokes the same level of patriotism that some intellectuals call madness. All that I know is that millions have laid there lives protecting it. And millions can lay there lives for it. All that I know is that I am ready to die or to kill to protect this song..And it is this spirit that gives this mere song its importance.

Also if we change the anthem once what next ?How many things should we change more... Tomorrow some people will call for Vande Mataram to be changed because its anti muslim and what not. Then some one will call for national anthem in regional languages. Then in local dialects. Cycles as these never stop. And the point is that they achieve no purpose. A patriot will remain a patriot no matter what is the national anthem. Ditto for a non patriot.. But the nation will loose precious time and energy that it could have used else where

well i totally disagree here. If I am putting my allegiance to a national anthem then its my responsibility to understand what I am singing.
Its disputed that Jan Gan Man was sung as praise for King George on his arrival in Bombay but then the main reason for the whole controversy is the minority appeasement policy of Congress. Its no doubt that Vande Matram was far more popular song at the time of independence but it was not acceptable for some myopic thinkers in Muslim community. The so called "intelligent" thinkers of time decided to go with Jan Gan Man which was not so popular. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jana_Gana_Mana and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vande_Mataram

religion and nationality are two different things altogether. What is India today may not be the same tomorrow as it wasn't same a few years back. Just a few centuries back even burma was considered part of India and still earlier, there was no concept of India as a country. It was like a region similar to say Europe or South East Asia. So this explains why Indians in general lack nationality.
Now the question of origin of national anthem. One of the worst thing that could have happened with India was Congress (Nehru Gandhi dynasty) ruled the country for 40 years post independence. It tried to "secularise" the entire culture and as a result an entire generation is lost for the country. I have no issues with Jan Gan Man but underplaying Vande Matram is a mockery for our freedom fighters who were not always "Congressi"

Have a look at these

http://www.satyashodh.com/janaganaman/index.htm
http://homepages.udayton.edu/~chattemr/janaganamana.html

We can debate endlessly.

But the point I wanted to ask is simple ? What benifit does the debaet entail ? Does it help in removing our problems ? If it does let's debate, lets change.
But if it doesn't then let's change things other than anthem.
And I am not yet convinced that the debate will have positive outcome

Well, my views are slightly radical here.
Why attach so much symbolism to patriotism?
I mean our preoccupation with the anthem and the flag is hilarious.

We have a huge nation facing millions of challenges ranging from infrastructure, justice, discrimination, social evils....
and yet our courts spend precious and prime time decidnig whether Aamir/ Sania disrespected the flag. How fucking idiotic is that?

How do we associate one's patriotic feeling with a flag? Someone may not do a n iota of work towards making my country proud or progress... but he/she is hailed a patriot by worshipping its symbols.

Till this time, we will always be slaves to idiots who will manipulate our energy to mindless riots/ mobs.
